About Partner Visa

Eligibility
If you are in a relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, you may be eligible to be granted a partner visa based on sponsorship. You may be eligible for a partner visa if you and your partner:• Are married• Are engaged to be married• Are in a de facto relationship• Have registered your relationship with a relevant State/Territory authority
There are several pathways through which partners of Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents can obtain a visa for Australia.
The most suitable visa option will depend on your individual circumstances, including whether the person applying for the visa is inside or outside Australia at the time of application.

Citizenship

You may apply for Australian citizenship while holding permanent resident visa:
  • living in Australia on a valid visa for the past 4 years
  • be a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen for the past 12 months
  • away from Australia for no more than 12 months in total in the past 4 years, including no more than 90 days in total in the past 12 months
  • must be of 'good character' if you are 18 years or over.
  • pass citizenship test with 75% score or more or being exempted
